The developed countries have shown significant progress in management and treating Mental Health problems. But in underdeveloped countries like Ethiopia, the prevailing conditions like culture, civil war, belief system and lack of policies have been hampering such progress. Mental Health is one of the most disadvantaged health programs in Ethiopia, both in terms of facilities and trained manpower.  Mental health services is most neglected services in Ethiopia. The Psychiatrist to population ratio is 1: 6 million. The average mental prevalence is 15% for adults and 11%for children. (WHO; regional office for Africa) The only institutions that provide Psychiatric services by specialist Doctor are found in Addis Ababa only. Mental health awareness is very poor in Ethiopia.

Stigma associated with mental illness is a serious problem that hinders early recognition and successful treatment of the illness.  In Ethiopia medical/physical problems are often given priorities while the disabling mental health issue is ignored. Negative attitudes towards mentally ill person such as a belief that the mentally ill person is possessed by the spirit, he/she is violent and they will never recover or heal are few examples. Lack of policies is the other big problem.

Vision Mental Health Foundation is founded in February 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It is a charitable, Non-profit Organization committed to fighting against mental illness in collaboration with NGO – General Psychiatric Rehabilitation center in Ethiopia. This organization is formed to give hands to Mentally Ill people of Ethiopia.

Mission Statement:

Vision Mental Health Foundation Inc develops and supports educational campaigns to increase the awareness of Mental Illness, render Mental Health services like finding early diagnosis, treating and rehabilitating the mentally ill of Ethiopia. The foundation also will engage in fighting the Stigma associated with mental illness.

What we do:

Organize a mission crusade of mental health professionals from the USA to Ethiopia to increase awareness of mental health issues to health professionals and the people of Ethiopia.

Solicit medications from pharmaceutical companies of the USA and ship it to treat the mentally ill of Ethiopia.

Raise funds from members, organizations and individuals to accomplish the mission.

Provide resources for the mental health professionals in Ethiopia.
